听力原文: Bad Boy is Olivia Goldsmith’s debut novel. The First Wives Club touched a nerve with women around the world when it was published in 1991 and was later made into a highly successful movie starring Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Middler. Since then her funny, on-target social commentary has been continued seen in a series of novels. But fans of the writer are set to be slightly disappointed with her latest offering, Bad Boy. The novel is basically about modern-day women’s conflicting attitudes towards men as friends versus lovers. It follows the story of journalist Tracie Higgins and her best friend Joe Delano who is sensitive, funny and nice, but couldn’t get a date to save his life. After several failed relationships he asks for Tracie’s help and(17)she sets about turning Joe from Mr. Nice Guy into a Bad Boy. And suddenly Joe is much in demand by the women he meets(Joe and Tracie begins to feel a bit jealous of the attention he is receiving and starts to look at Joe in a new light herself. The premise and resolution of the story are all fairly predictable— the book is, after all, simply a romantic comedy. Its strength lies in Goldsmith’s ability to create clever dialogue and over the top characters, while its weakness is that we expect slightly more than this from the popular author.(18)A good, light read if you don’t want anything too demanding.

听力原文: The ancient Egyptians made many outstanding contributions in various fields. They created basic forms of math and a 365-day calendar. They invented a form of picture writing. They also invented a paper like writing material made from the stems of plants. The Egyptians were also great advanced in the development of sailing ships and barges. In ancient Egypt and certain other regions, the people made their first rafts of bundles of reeds. In time,(20)the Egyptians

learned to lash bundles of reeds together to make boats that had a spoonlike shape. By about 4000 B.C., they had learned to build long, narrow boats powered by a row of people. During the next 1,000 years, the Egyptians made two more great advances in the development of ships.(21)By about 3000 B.C., they had discovered that sails could harness the wind and propel their boats. In addition, the Egyptians had learned to build boats out of planks of wood. After people knew how to make plank boats, they could even build ships—vessels that are big enough to cross the oceans. The ancient Egyptians designed many kinds of vessels. Their most outstanding achievement was probably the huge barges that carried enormous stone pillars from quarries up the Nile River. The biggest barges measured more than 200 feet long and carried 750 short tons of cargo.

听力原文: People have always tried to understand why certain things happen. For example, they have wanted to know why the sun rises and sets and what causes lightning. They have also wanted to know how the earth was created and how and where humanity first appeared. Today, people have scientific answers and theories for many such questions about the world around them.(22)But in earlier times—and in some parts of the world today— people lacked the knowledge to provide scientific answers. They therefore explained natural events in terms of stories about gods, goddesses, and heroes. Such stories are known as myths, and the study of myths is called mythology. In early times, every society developed its own myths, which played an important part in the society’s religious life. This religious significance has always separated myths from similar stories, such as folk tales and legends.(23)The people of a society may tell folk tales and legends for amusement, without believing them. But they usually consider their myths sacred and completely true. Most myths concern divine beings.(24)These divine beings have supernatural powers—powers far greater than any human being has. But in spite of their supernatural powers, many gods, goddesses, and heroes of mythology have human characteristics. They are guided by such emotions as love and jealousy, and they experience birth and death. A number of mythical figures even look like human beings. In many cases, the human qualities of the divine beings reflect a society’s ideals.(25)Good gods and goddesses have the qualities a society admires, and evil ones have the qualities it dislikes.

听力原文: Did you know that infants prefer their mothers’ voices to that of other females? And that they will change their behavior in order to solicit her voice? Sounds(26)reasonable to me. Ok, but did you know that a fetus(胎儿)can (27)distinguish its mother’s voice from that of other females before it’s even born? I’m not sure I follow that, I mean how could anyone possibly (28)detect that? By listening to the heart. Fetuses at term were played recordings of their mothers reading a(29)poem, as well as recordings of a female stranger reading the same poem. The fetuses’ hearts(30)accelerated when they heard their own mothers’ voices, but(31)actually slowed when they heard the voice of the female stranger. The

recordings(32)lasted two minutes, but the effects on the fetuses’ hearts went on for several minutes(33)beyond the recordings. That’s pretty interesting, but so what does that mean? The reason is that the experience before birth seems to affect infants’ preferences and behavior. Not only that, but fetuses’ recognition of their mothers’ voices proves that fetuses are capable of learning.(35)This all leads scientists to believe that the process of learning language may begin before birth. Perhaps that infants are so quick to pick up on language shouldn’t be surprising.(36)They’ve had some experience with language before they were born. In fact, their speedy grasping of language may not be due to some innate ability set into the brain.
